Seria legítimo dizer que já não há ponta de paciência para o revivalismo 80′s. Mas depois há bandas que nos fazem engolir as palavras. É o caso do trio synth-pop de Brooklyn, os Selebrities, formado por Maria Usbeck, Jer Robert Paulin e Max Petersen. Recebi esta manhã o muito esperado álbum de estreia Delusions. E só posso dizer que fiquei rendido à nostalgia pop noir desta colecção de pérolas de sabor retro-futurista, com inspirações que navegam entre o pós-punk do final dos anos 70 e as baladas pop e brilhos italo-disco da década de 80. Aliás, é impossível não pensarmos em nomes como OMD, The Cure, New Order ou Siouxsie and The Banshees ao longo deste sublime disco.

A produção vintage confere a este álbum um tom atmosférico e contemplativo, banda sonora perfeita para percorrer as ruas vazias da cidade à noite, feita de guitarras atmosféricas, teclados reluzentes e synths elásticos que prendem cada canção à vida. A voz, a melancolia sentida e entrega desencantada de Maria Usbeck criam ambientes negros e enigmáticos de Verão gótico, que projectam em canções como ’46th & Bliss’, ‘Delusions’ ou ‘Time’, emoções disformes de paixão sôfrega, desejo, incerteza, tristeza, desespero. Fiquem com o single e o vídeo de ‘Can’t Make Up My Mind’.

It would be fair to say that there is no more patience for 80′s revival. But then there are bands that make us swallow our words. This is the case of Brooklyn synth-pop trio Selebrities, formed by Maria Usbeck, Jer Robert Paulin and Max Petersen. This morning I received the long awaited debut album ‘Delusions’ to review. And I can only say that I surrendered to the pop noir nostalgia sense of this collection of retro-futuristic flavored gems, with inspirations that diverge between late 70′s post-punk to  80′s pop ballads and shimmering italo-disco. Indeed, it is impossible not to think of names like OMD, The Cure, New Order or Siouxsie and the Banshees throughout this sublime album. The vintage production gives this album an atmospheric and contemplative tonality, a perfect soundtrack to walk around empty streets on the city at night, made ​​of atmospheric guitars, splendent keyboards and elastic synths holding each song to life. The voice, the touching melancholy and the disenchanted delivery of Maria Usbeck create an ambience of dark and enigmatic summertime goth, embodied in songs like ’46th & Bliss’, ‘Delusions’ or ‘Time’, drawing misshapen emotions of insatiable passion, desire, uncertainty, sadness and despair. Posso-vos dizer sinceramente que estou maravilhado como o álbum homónimo de Wolfram. O produtor conhecido pela sua sonoridade Euro Dance, que tanto provoca o pânico pelos hipsters actuais. Mas na verdade, se pensarmos que o Italo-Disco é a vertente mais vibrante deste género e que canções como I Feel Love de Donna Summer ou bandas como Kraftwerk estiveram na linha da frente deste movimento, podemos concluir que há vida para além do lado foleiro do Euro Dance.

Neste álbum de colaborações de luxo, já tínhamos ouvido o delicioso house anos 90 de Fireworks, ao lado de Andy Butler e Kim Ann Foxman dos Hercules and Love Affair e, mais recentemente, o aditivo Hold My Breath com os Holy Ghost!. Depois da primeira audição, fui imediatamente engolido por esta espiral de canções reluzentes de nomes colossais como Patrick Pulsinger, Sebastian Muravchik, o aclamado produtor robótico holandês Legowelt, Sally Shapiro ou estrelas da música hi-nrg como Paul Parker, no estrondoso e transpirado Out of Control (uma das minhas favoritas), e Haddaway (do hit dos anos 80 What is Love - dispensa introduções).

O resultado é um álbum viciante habitado por batidas luxuosas Deep House, que desenterra os clássicos italo-disco de forma divertida, fresca e apontada aos pés com uma violência assustadora. O álbum, com o jovem Wolframzinho com a sua mãe na capa, sai a 1 e Abril na Permanent Vacation.

I can honestly say that I am amazed with Wolfram’s new self-titled album. The producer known for his Euro Dance sound, which causes so much panic amongst hipsters today. But actually, if we think that the Italo-Disco is the most vibrant part of this genre and songs like Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’ or bands like Kraftwerk were in the forefront of this movement, we can conclude that there is life beyond the tacky side Euro Dance. On this album of top-notch collaborations, we had heard the delicious 90′s house of ‘Fireworks’, along with Andy Butler and Kim Ann Foxman of Hercules and Love Affair and more recently, the additive ‘Hold My Breath’ along with Holy Ghost!. After the first hearing, I was immediately swallowed by the spiral of sparkling songs sung by huge names like Patrick Pulsinger, Sebastian Muravchik, acclaimed Dutch robotic producer Legowelt, Sally Shapiro and the presence of stellar hi-nrg stars like Paul Parker, on the frantic and sweaty ‘Out of Control’ (one of my favorites) and Haddaway (from 80′s hit ‘What is Love’ – no introductions needed). The result is an addictive album made by luxuriant Deep house beats, which unearths italo-disco classics in a fun and fresh way pointing directly to your feet with terrifying violence. The album, with little Wolfram Jr. with his mother on the cover, drops on April 1st via Permanent Vacation.

A primeira sensação que tive ao ouvir os Dumbo Gets Mad foi  ‘ena, aqui está um perfeito filho bastardo saído de uma relação liberal entre os Air, Led Zeppelin e The Velvet Undergound’.

Este one-man-project, que conta com vocais da namorada em alguns dos temas, começou a norte de Itália no pico do Verão e reune influências diversos artistas como Gonjasufi, Flying Lotus, The Radio Dept ou Captain Beefheart, num misto de trip-rock alucinogénico com sintetizadores análogos retro-futuristas.

Elephants at the Door é um impressionante álbum de estreia, com temas de psicadelia cósmica sublime, sonoridades saídas da clássica consola Spektrum, percussão tribal e balanço geral solarengo e despreocupado,  que atingem o seu auge em canções como  Why Try?, Marmalade Kids, Sleeping Over ou Plumy Tale.

Um disco altamente recomendável e inteiramente grátis. Agarrem este cogumelo mágico colorido aqui e gozem sem sentimento de culpa.

The first feeling I had when I heard Dumbo Gets Mad was ‘what a perfect bastard son from a liberal relationship between Air, Led Zeppelin and The Velvet Underground “. This one-man project, which features vocals from his girlfriend in some songs, began in northern Italy at the peak of summer and brings together influences of diverse artists such as Gonjasufi, Flying Lotus, The Radio Dept. or Captain Beefheart, in a mix of hallucinogenic tripped out-rock, analog synthesizers with a retro-futuristic feel. ‘Elephants at The Door’ is an impressive debut album, with themes of sublime cosmic psychedelia, bleeps out of the classic Spektrum consoles, tribal percussion and a general carefree sunny swing, which reach its peak in songs like ‘Why Try?’, ‘Marmalade Kids’, ‘Sleeping Over’ or ‘Plumy Tale. O álbum de estreia da dupla finlandesa LCMDF (Le Corps Mince de Françoise), Love & Nature, sai no próximo dia 21 de Fevereiro. O SBB teve a oportunidade de o ouvir e deixa uma review com um sorriso estampado na cara. Apesar da terna idade, Emma (22) e Mia (20) parecem ter uma enorme herança musical a correr-lhes nas veias, que depositam num disco de pop technicolor, de energia imparável e hooks assassinos. Uma produção cuidada, munida de synths vintage com fartura, texturas intrincadas de ritmos, bateria, guitarras ferozes, uivos selvagens, sirenes que nos empurram para um novo cenário num piscar de olhos. Existem referências sonoras que me relembram cenas tão eclécticas como o electroclash das Chicks on Speed (Time, Have I Lost My Mind), o girl-rock das The Bangles (Cool and Bored), o indie de Beck (Future Me) e mesmo o pop psicadélico dos B-52′s (We are Cannibals), Tom Tom Club ou Neneh Cherry.

Comparações à parte, estas raparigas entregam um álbum fresco, solarengo,  insanamente aditivo, propulsivo,  apontado aos pés e à cabeça, atirando palavras ao ar com impacto devastador na pista de dança, letras soltas descomplexadas, sem tretas e uma imensa vontade de divertir. Por outras palavras: altamente recomendável. Love & Nature vai ser publicado pela Heavenly Recordings.

The debut album of Finnish duo LCMDF (ex-Le Corps Mince Françoise) will be out next February 21th. SBB had the opportunity to listen to it and here’s my review with a smile on my face. Despite the tender age, Emma (22) and Mia (20) seem to have a heavy music heritage running in their veins, which they gather in this Technicolor pop album, of unstoppable energy and killer hooks. A careful production, filled with plenty of vintage synths, intricate textures of rhythms, drums, fierce guitars, wild howls and sirens pushing us through different scenarios in the blink of an eye. There are sonic references that remind scenes as eclectic as Chicks on Speed’s electroclash (‘Time, Have I Lost My Mind’), Bangles’ girl-rock (‘Cool and Bored’), Beck’s indie (‘Future Me’) and even B-52′s tripped-out pop (‘We are Cannibals’), Tom Tom Club or Neneh Cherry. Comparisons aside, these girls deliver a totally fresh sunny album, propulsive and insanely addictive,pointed to the feet and head, throwing words into the air with devastating impact on the dance floor, uncomplicated lyrics, with no bullshit and an overwhelming desire to entertain. Eu esbarrei por acaso nos The New Division. O quinteto de LA formado por John Glenn Kunkel (vocais) and Michael Janz (synth, produção), Brock Woolsey (guitarras), Mark Michalski (synths) e Kenny Wells (bateria) segue as pisadas de bandas como New Order, Kraftwerk ou Depeche Mode com uma sonoridade que celebra o synth/electro-pop da década de 80, combinando-o com arranjos electrónicos contemporâneos com influências de Royksopp, Deadmau5, Cut Copy ou Massive Attack. Só pelas referências já podiam prever grandes expectativas. Mas fiquei arrebatado com a qualidade do EP The Rookie, que de rookie não tem nada. Este rapazes têm muita bagagem. O EP de 6 faixas é um rush de adrenalina dreamwave, de synths inter-galácticos que se prendem à cintura e nos abanam cada músculo do corpo, com vocais atmosféricos a la Tesla Boy e um ritmo vintage bombástico que se agarra aos pés e insiste em não sair. Oiçam faixas como Starfield, Health ou Devotion e digam-me se não tenho razão. O EP Rookie pode ser encontrado e ouvido aqui.

I stumbled into The New Division by chance. This LA quintet formed by John Glenn Kunkel (vocals), Michael Janz (synths, production), Brock Woolsey (guitars), Mark Michalski (synths) and Kenny Wells (drums), follows the footsteps of bands like New Order, Kraftwerk or Depeche Mode with a sound that celebrates 80′s synth/electro-pop, combining it with contemporary electronic arrangements with influences from Royksopp, Deadmau5, Cut Copy or Massive Attack. Only for the references we could foresee great expectations. But I was simply overwhelmed with the quality of the EP The Rookie, that’s everything but rookie. These boys are totally pro. The 6-track EP is a rush of Dreamwave adrenaline with inter-galactic synths that cling to the waist and shake every muscle in your body, atmospheric vocals a la Tesla Boy and a bombastic vintage rhythm that grabs your feet and insists on not leaving. Não querendo ser demasiado sentimental, o novo álbum dos Tennis, banda indie-pop formada pelo casal Patrick Riley e Alaina Moore, é paixão à primeira vista. Depois de alguns singles muito bem recebidos como Marathon, Baltimore ou Take Me Somewhere, a dupla vai lançar Cape Dory, disco com sabor a maresia que nasceu em alto-mar durante os oito meses que passaram a velejar pela costa do Atlântico Norte.

A voz de Alaina Moore tem o poder encantatório do canto das sereias e uma doçura que reconforta, em notas sinceras e inflexões pueris que me lembram com saudosismo a música dos britânicos Fairground Atraction e da sua vocalista Eddi Reader. Cape Dory é composto por 10 canções sonhadoras, a puxar ao rock baladeiro anos 60 dos She & Him, cheias de sol e esperança, cantadas na proa do navio, em alvoradas de céus alaranjados, com o coração cheio de expectativa  sede de aventura. Cape Dory chega dia 18 de Janeiro via Fat Possum.

Not wanting to be over sentimental, the new album of Tennis, indie-pop band formed by husband and wife couple Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore, is love at first sight. After some very well-received singles like Marathon, Baltimore or Take Me Somewhere, the duo prepares the release of Cape Dory, an album with beach flavors that was born at high sea during the eight months they spent sailing the coast of the North Atlantic. Alaina Moore’s voice has the power of incantation of mermaid songs and a sweetness that comforts, in heartfelt notes and puerile inflections that remind me nostalgically the music of british band Fairground Atraction and their vocalist Eddi Reader. Cape Dory is composed of 10 dreamy songs, with a hint of She & Him’s 60s rock ballads, sunny and full of hope, sung in the the bow of the ship under orange morning skies, with a heart full of expectation and thirst for adventure. Já perdi a conta dos novos projectos chillwave que apareceram no último ano. Na verdade, já nem tenho grande paciência para ouvir as músicas mais que uma vez. Gosto das emoções feel good, do levitar entre o sonho e o estado de semi-consciência, da nostalgia dispersa, mas poucos são os nomes que me agarram a esta fantasia. MillionYoung, o projecto do produtor de 22 anos Mike Diaz, é um caso distinto. Depois do EP aural Sunndreamm, em 2009, o jovem compositor prepara-se para editar o longa-duração de estreia Replicants no início de Fevereiro.

Replicants é um álbum na forma mais verdadeira, que progride de canções de electrónica suave no início para fantásticas explosões pop no final. Uma colecção de vibrações glo-fi tropicais relaxadas, guitarras atmosféricas e synths nebulosos, num melting-pot de influências que vão de Prince e Michael Jackson, Aphex Twin ou Spritualized. É um conglomerado de estilos e sons que se misturam num único grande álbum. Replicants vai estar disponível via Old Flame Records.

I lost count of the endless new chillwave  projects that bursted last year. I actually don’t even have much patience for listening to the music more than once. I enjoy the feel good emotions, levitating between the dream and the state of semi-consciousness, the dispersed  nostalgia, but there are few names that make me grab to this fantasy. Millionyoung, the project of 22yo producer Mike Diaz, is a distint case. After the aural Sunndreamm EP in 2009, the young composer is preparing to release the full-length debut album Replicants in early February. Replicants is an album in the truest form, which progresses from gentle electronica in the beginning to fantastic pop explosions at the end. A collection of vibrant glo-fi tropical beats, atmospheric guitars and hazy synths, in a melting-pot of influences ranging from Price to Michael Jackson, Aphex Twin to Spritualized. It is a conglomeration of styles and sounds that blend into one great album. Replicants will be out on Old Flame Records.

Ainda não tendo saído oficialmente, o álbum de estreia do cantor/produtor britânico James Blake já é dos meus favoritos de 2011. Apesar de sair apenas a 7 de Fevereiro, o leak que surgiu na net esta semana veio reforçar a forte aposta de todos os tastemakers musicais à volta do mundo (incluindo a BBC) como um dos talentos a seguir neste novo ano. À já conhecida (e apaixonante) versão de Limit to Your Love de Feist, o artista de 22 anos acrescenta mais 10 soberbos temas originais.

Confesso que os anteriores EP CMYK e Klavierwerke não me deslumbraram, mas fiquei rendido (e de certa maneira, desconcertado) quando acabei de ouvir este tão antecipado longa-duração. Blake dá seguimento às suas explorações dubstep ou pós-dubstep tímidas e introspectivas, com rendições singelas ao piano e vocais de intensidade acutilante que produzem o efeito ‘soco no estômago’, fundindo a nostalgia de Bon Iver, com o sofrimento de Antony Hegarty e a soul experiente de Mayer Hawthorne. Melodias capazes de puxar pelos sacos lacrimais, narrativas parcas e apontamentos electrónicos singulares com pedaços industrias e outros mais pop, batimento cardíaco entrecortado, vocais ora distorcidos ora em carne viva, baladas intrincadas de vulnerabilidade e emoções à flor da pele.

Um álbum enorme, triste e grandioso que vos vai apanhar desprevenidos em canções a roçar a perfeição como Wilhelms Scream, Lindesfarne II ou Why Don’t You Call Me. Um álbum que se termina com a garganta seca e a pergunta: ‘será que isto aconteceu mesmo?’. Acho que não estava preparado para esta sensação…. Reservem o álbum aqui.

Although not officially out, the debut album of UK singer / producer James Blake is already one of my favorites for 2011. Despite being released only on February 7th, the leak that appeared on the web this week reinforced the solid opinion of all music tastemakers around the world (including BBC) as a talent to follow closely this year. To the already known (and passionate) version of Feist’s Limit to Your Love, the 22 yo artist added 10 superb original songs. I confess I wasn’t dazzled with the previous EP’s CMYK or Klavierwerke, but I was rendered (and to some disconcerted) when I just heard this much anticipated full-length album. Blake continues with his shy and introspective dubstep or post-dubstep explorations, with unpretentious piano renditions and a vocal intensity that produces a poignant effect of “punch in the stomach’, blending Bon Iver’s nostalgia, Antony Hegarty’s agony and Mayer Hawthorne’s experienced soul. Melodies capable to set your lacrimal sac loose, scarce narratives and notes of electronic samples that flow between industrial and current pop, interrupted heartbeats, sometimes distorted sometimes raw vocals, intricate ballads about vulnerability and emotions on the surface of the skin. A great album, sad and grandiose that will caught you off guard with near-perfection songs like Wilhelms Scream, Lindesfarne II or Why Don’t You Call Me. An album that will leave your throat dry and asking ‘Was this Real? ’. I think I wasn’t quite prepared for this feeling… Pre-order the album here.

O álbum de estreia dos australianos Gypsy & The Cat, intitulado Gilgamesh, foi publicado a 1 de Outubro e pouco deu que falar. Inclusivamente eu, que fiquei encantado com o primeiro single Time to Wander, só reparei no longa-duração esta semana. Por isso senti uma necessidade premente de escrever algumas linhas sobre este álbum essencial, para mim, um dos mais eficazes deste ano.

A primeira vez que ouvi falar de Xavier Bacash e Lionel Towers, dois jovens de 21 anos naturais de Melbourne, foi com Jona Vark na nona compilação da Kitsuné Maison e o magistral Time to Wander editado a 21 de Junho via Young and Lost. Quanto ao álbum Gilgamesh, só o posso comparar à sensação de abrir uma janela pela manhã e de encontrarmos um dia radioso de sol e céu azul. Um disco de pose descontraída, que se destaca por uma produção cuidada e atenta ao pormenor, com erupções de fantasias bucólicas, que cruzam soft-rock com electro contemporânea e baladas folk, vibrações retro relaxantes com ritmos actuais dreamwave, vocais amenos e falsetes modernos que trazem à memória os Bee Gees, ganchos de synths cósmicos com orquestrações românticas, chorus ternos saturados de sol e emoções naïve.

Difícil neste álbum, só mesmo apontar as favoritas. The Piper’s Song, Breakaway, Running Romeo,  Gilgamesh ou Sight of a Tear e Human Desire (que gritam Scissor Sisters) todas elas são gloriosos momentos de inspiração ao nascer do sol. The debut album of Australian band Gypsy & The Cat, entitled Gilgamesh, was released on October 1st and little was said about it. Even I, who was delighted with the first single Time To Wander, only heard it this week. So I felt an urgent need to write a few lines on this quintessential album, for me, one of the most effective this year. The first time I’ve heard of Xavier Bacash and Lionel Towers, two 21 year olds from Melbourne, was on the 9th Kitsuné Maison compilation with Jona Vark  and the magisterial Time to Wander released on June 21 via Young and Lost. As for Gilgamesh, I can only compare it to the feeling of opening the window in the morning and discover an splendid blue sky and sunny day. An album of relaxed pose, which stands out for an attentive to detail and careful production, with eruptions of bucolic fantasies, combining soft-rock with contemporary electro and folk ballads, soothing retro vibes with updated Dreamwave rhythms, warm vocals and modern falsetto reminding me of the Bee Gees, cosmic synth hooks with romantic orchestrations, tender chorus saturated with sun and naïve emotions. The only difficulty in this album is to point out my favorite songs. The Piper’s Song, Breakaway, Running Romeo, Gilgamesh or the highly Scissor Sisters-esk Sight of the Loom and Human Desire: all of them are glorious moments of sunshine inspiration. The album can be heard on the band’s page and can be purchased here.

Clinging to a Scheme é um álbum que nos faz acordar bem. Se bem que não seja para uma dia inteiramente radioso, há sempre laivos de sol que nos tocam a cara com este disco a tocar. A dream-pop dos suecos The Radio Dept. faz-me lembrar algo a meio caminho entre Washed Out e Blackbird Blackbird, um tipo de música apaixonante que nos beija os ouvidos, acaricia-os com vozes sussurrantes que se relacionam connosco em vez de nos pôr a mexer.

Johan Duncanson, Martin Larsson e Daniel Tjäder são responsáveis por uma das melhores colecções de músicas do último ano, canções em registo sonolento mas que nunca nos deixam dormir. Canções que não dão vontade de rir, que saltam entre o melancólico e o ligeiramente esperançoso, mas que também nunca dão vontade de chorar. Canções como Heaven’s on Fire, Memory Loss, Never Follow Suit, David ou The Video Dept são a mistura perfeita para me fazer sentir em equilíbrio, com um sorriso acanhado na cara e pronto para mais um dia.

Clinging to a Scheme is an album that makes us wake up really well. Although it’s not for an entirely bright day, there’s always a hint of sunshine rays touching our face when this music is playing. The swedish dream-pop of The Radio Dept. reminds me of something halfway between Washed Out and Blackbird Blackbird, a type of passionate music that kisses our ears, caresses them with whispering voices that relate to us instead of bringing us to move. Johan Duncanson, Martin Larsson and Daniel Tjader are responsible for one of the best collections of songs from the last year, sleeping songs that never let us sleep. Songs that don’t make you feel like laughing, jumping between melancholic and slightly hopeful, but also won’t make want to cry. Songs like Heaven’s on Fire, Memory Loss, Never Follow Suit or The Video Dept. are the perfect blend to make me feel in the right balance, with a sheepish grin on my face and ready for another day.
