A segunda é o anúncio do álbum de estreia Coastal Grooves pela Domino Records a 8 de Agosto, do qual sai este sumarento Sutphin Boulevard. Mais uma vez Hynes mostra que tem uma voz com um sobrenatural poder panty-dropper.

Two novelties about Dev Hynes’ (aka Lightspeed Champion) new project Blood Orange . The first is the video of ‘Dinner’, directed by Alan Del Rio Ortiz. The second is the announcement of the debut album ‘Coastal Grooves’ on August 8th through Domino Records, which includes this juicy ‘Sutphin Boulevard’. O projecto synth-pop calmante Mr. Little Jeans pertence a uma senhora, Monica Birkenes, cantora norueguesa de sensibilidade tocante que conheci pela primeira vez com uma versão quase acapella lindíssima de Single Ladies de Beyoncé. A cantora fez uma interpretação mágica do single The Suburbs dos canadianos Arcade Fire, acrescentando para um ambiente escuro e temperamental com linhas de synths retorcidas sob a sua voz de anjo caído.

Soothing synth-pop project Mr. Little Jeans actually belongs to a lady, Monica Birkenes, a Norwegian singer with a touching sensitivity that I first met with a beautiful almost acapella version of ‘Single Ladie’s by Beyoncé. The singer did a magical interpretaion of the single ‘The Suburbs’ from Canadian band Arcade Fire, dragging it to a moody dark atmosphere with warped synth lines over her fallen angel vocals.

Os Villa Cola são um trio londrino composto por Ranya Dubé (voz), Paul Bateman (baixo) e Alex Watson (bateria). Fortemente influenciados pelo pelo e rock dos anos 80, a banda conseguiu moldar esta memorabilia vintage em peças de arte únicas de intensa atitude punk, estilismos vocais rock e uma batida omnipresente de synths carregados. Imaginem a irreverência sexy e frieza desprendida dos Blondie com o galanteio lânguido dos Roxy Music e a pulsação digital dos New Order. Qualquer coisa por aí, mas com uma abordagem nova, fresca e estimulante potenciada pela ultra sensual voz de Ranya e assente num produção de electrónica lo-fi pegajosa, guitarras salivantes e percussão propulsora.

Villa Cola are a London-based trio consisting of Ranya Dubé (vocals), Paul Bateman (bass) and Alex Watson (drums). Strongly influenced by the ’80s punk and rock movement, the band has managed to fuse this vintage memorabilia in unique artworks made with an intense punk attitude, rock vocal stylings and an ubiquitous hard hitting synth beat. Imagine Blondie’s sexy irreverence and cold restraint, with Roxy Music’s languid gallantry and New Order’s digital pulse. Something like that, but with a totally new, fresh and stimulating approach, enhanced by Ranya’s ultra-seductive vocals and laid on bright lo-fi electronic production, mouth-watering guitars and propulsive drums. Os The New Division são uma daquelas novas bandas das quais espero grandes feitos no futuro. O quarteto synth-pop californiano acaba de partilhar o primeiro vídeo oficial, realizado por Mitchell MacIntire, para uma das mais aditivas canções do EP Rookie, o encantador Starfield. Fiquem atentos, hoje a banda irá lançar o single duplo True Lies/Saturday Night na sua bandcamp com remixes de John Glenn, Datsyuk, Vaab e Juan the Tiger.

The New Division are one of those new bands that I expect great things in the future. The Californian synth-pop 4-piece just dropped their first official video, directed by Mitchell MacIntire, for one of the most addictive songs on Rookie EP, the charming ‘Starfield’. Os Expo são uma nova banda natural de Ghent, Bélgica, que fazem parte de um projecto de DJ belgas bem conhecidos (não revelada até agora). A primeira música conhecida I Don’t Mind, inspira-se no synth-pop da década de 80, com uma batida digital cósmica vintage e levemente nostálgica, apesar de efusiva e iluminada, sobre uma voz absurdamente sexy. Parece-me que vamos ouvir falar muitos destes rapazes nos próximos meses. Agarrem I Don’t Mind de graça em troca de um Like no facebook.

Expo, the new Ghent-based band from Belgium, are also part of a rather well-known belgian dj-formation (not revealed yet). The first song called ‘I Don’t Mind’, gets it’s inspiration on 80′s synth-pop era, with a slightly nostalgic vintage cosmic digital beat, despite bing effusive and luminous, over an absurdly sexy voice. A sua sonoridade move-se por territórios dance de balanço solarengo, habitados por guitarras musculadas e synths gulosos e reluzentes, numa mistura de falsetes felinos e elementos resgatados à época dourada do electro-pop anos 80 e arranjos retro-futuristas. Deixo os divertidos vídeos para Gio Gio, Pussy Cocaine ou Under Control e o head banger infeccioso Y.O.U.T.H. C.L.U.B.

Tiger Love, formed by brothers Roy and Gigi and underage drummer Loral, are the latest synth-pop sensation in London. Their sound moves through sun-soaked dance territories inhabited by muscular guitars and tasty shiny synths, in a mixture of feline falsettos and elements borrowed from 80′s electro-pop golden age and retro-futuristic production. Seria legítimo dizer que já não há ponta de paciência para o revivalismo 80′s. Mas depois há bandas que nos fazem engolir as palavras. É o caso do trio synth-pop de Brooklyn, os Selebrities, formado por Maria Usbeck, Jer Robert Paulin e Max Petersen. Recebi esta manhã o muito esperado álbum de estreia Delusions. E só posso dizer que fiquei rendido à nostalgia pop noir desta colecção de pérolas de sabor retro-futurista, com inspirações que navegam entre o pós-punk do final dos anos 70 e as baladas pop e brilhos italo-disco da década de 80. Aliás, é impossível não pensarmos em nomes como OMD, The Cure, New Order ou Siouxsie and The Banshees ao longo deste sublime disco.

A produção vintage confere a este álbum um tom atmosférico e contemplativo, banda sonora perfeita para percorrer as ruas vazias da cidade à noite, feita de guitarras atmosféricas, teclados reluzentes e synths elásticos que prendem cada canção à vida. A voz, a melancolia sentida e entrega desencantada de Maria Usbeck criam ambientes negros e enigmáticos de Verão gótico, que projectam em canções como ’46th & Bliss’, ‘Delusions’ ou ‘Time’, emoções disformes de paixão sôfrega, desejo, incerteza, tristeza, desespero. Fiquem com o single e o vídeo de ‘Can’t Make Up My Mind’.

It would be fair to say that there is no more patience for 80′s revival. But then there are bands that make us swallow our words. This is the case of Brooklyn synth-pop trio Selebrities, formed by Maria Usbeck, Jer Robert Paulin and Max Petersen. This morning I received the long awaited debut album ‘Delusions’ to review. And I can only say that I surrendered to the pop noir nostalgia sense of this collection of retro-futuristic flavored gems, with inspirations that diverge between late 70′s post-punk to  80′s pop ballads and shimmering italo-disco. Indeed, it is impossible not to think of names like OMD, The Cure, New Order or Siouxsie and the Banshees throughout this sublime album. The vintage production gives this album an atmospheric and contemplative tonality, a perfect soundtrack to walk around empty streets on the city at night, made ​​of atmospheric guitars, splendent keyboards and elastic synths holding each song to life. The voice, the touching melancholy and the disenchanted delivery of Maria Usbeck create an ambience of dark and enigmatic summertime goth, embodied in songs like ’46th & Bliss’, ‘Delusions’ or ‘Time’, drawing misshapen emotions of insatiable passion, desire, uncertainty, sadness and despair.
